After 2 years of slumber Surrey Is The Bomb is back and I’m fired up! Follow @SurreyIsTheBomb on Twitter for my unfiltered opinions and watch as local political hopefuls struggle to answer my pointed, sometimes harsh, questions. Today was a red letter day for fans of political gaffes and internet drama, let’s break it down.
Yesterday I created a few memes to try and (light-heartedly) sum up the 3 leading candidates for Surrey Mayor. Today they were shared by a few local journalists and things got interesting. Here they are, it’s ok to laugh.
I feel like they capture current public perception pretty well… Anyways Beau Simpson, former editor of the Surrey Now and current Safe Surrey Coalition council candidate, didn’t particularly like the way I depicted his boss Doug McCallum. McCallum, who is running for mayor as the head of the Safe Surrey Coalition, has chosen to use fear as a campaign platform in Surrey. Beau disagrees with my take on their platform, Doug disagrees too, Beau and Doug are wrong. Doug McCallum was Mayor of Surrey before current Mayor Diane Watts ousted him in the 2005 election. McCallum’s policies paved the way for developments that had no plan and now exist as near ghettos.
As for Hepner and Rasode, Hepner ignored my (light-hearted) memes and Rasode thought they were amusing. Take that however you’d like. Things got increasingly weird with McCallum as the day progressed. He favourited a tweet which could easily be interpreted as sexism about Rasode.
Been deleted, but @McCallum4Mayor retweeted lipstick on a pig reference to @BarinderRasode: http://t.co/zbR7hv7erK This one’s getting nasty.

The tweet has been deleted and McCallum claims he clicked to favourite the tweet by accident. I accidentally wrote this entire article, whoops! Then McCallum and Beau “the enforcer” Simpson went into full damage control. It was too late. A little later I commented on a post about an Omni News video showing Rasode and McCallum together at a Rasode photo op in June and Doug had seen enough, he unfollowed and blocked the Surrey Is The Bomb Twitter account along with some others that were asking him questions. We’ll leave the optics of those two together for another day (seriously though, think about it…) and focus on McCallum.
When he has to answer tough questions his solution is to run and hide and let his “people” handle it. He has what appears to be a mock Twitter account called Crime City Surrey trolling the other candidates too. “Crime City” called me out for being a nameless, faceless twitter account and a bully. I provided this equally nameless and faceless twitter account/bully with a link to my bio on wflbc.com but that wasn’t enough. When asked by me and others to reveal their identity “Crime City” went quiet. If asking tough questions and wanting real answers makes me a bully then I guess I am. I expect that of anyone who wants my vote, plain and simple.
I wonder if McCallum will still be in this race when Surrey votes on November 15th.
